Austerity and Feminist Intersectionality
Jane Stinson explains what austerity is, its impacts on social programs and public services, and what it means for women’s rights and gender equality. Using a feminist intersectional lens, the educational resource explores how at its very root, calls for lower taxes and restricted government spending is regressive and anti-feminist. Stinson explains that these measures disproportionately impact women in Canada because austerity reinforces and centres market-based thinking. This market-based thinking ignores existing structural gendered, intersectional inequities, and deeply held patriarchal beliefs that do not value care work.
