Whose technology? A tool for social justice or of control?
On March 16, 2023, CRIAW-ICREF hosted the “Whose technology? A tool for social justice or of control” participatory parallel event as part of the NGO CSW67 Forum. This event was held online, via Zoom.
Information and communications technologies (ICTs) are often portrayed as neutral, but it is well documented that these technologies reproduce inequalities, systemic discrimination, racism, and misogyny. The parallel event focused on how ICTs are used by “Big Tech” corporations and governments to maintain power and reproduce inequalities, and how we might use feminist principles to guide a regulatory framework for accountability. It opened with presentations from Noura Aljizawi (Citizen Lab) and Rhiannon Wong (Women’s Shelters Canada).
This interactive event facilitated knowledge-sharing and network-building to strengthen feminists’ collective analysis of the transformational potential and the limitations of using ICTs. It provided a space for feminists from different regions to hold a collective conversation and talk through strategies for our domestic contexts as well as internationally.
The full, detailed event summary can be found in the UN Special Report 2023.
