The winner of the 2018 Barbara Roberts Memorial Fund prize is Jillian Skeet and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). The WILPF has been affirming the importance of women’s roles in peace-building, conflict resolution, and humanitarianism for more than a century, and so this project wonderfully honours Barbara Roberts’ legacy as a peace activist. Skeet will undertake a research project that assesses the social and economic costs of the federal government’s failure to adequately address the social needs of women, against the social and economic costs of prioritizing defence spending above domestic social needs. This project will prioritize women’s stories and input, and it will geared towards creating public materials (booklets, pamphlets, and media appearances) with a view to influencing public understanding and government legislation necessary to enhance women’s quality of life and security.
Congratulations Jillian Skeet and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom!
