Announcing the recipient of the Marta Danylewycz Memorial Fund!

Karissa Patton, a PhD candidate at the University of Saskatchewan, is the recipient of the Marta Danylewycz Memorial Fund award for 2019. Her dissertation examines reproductive health activism in Southern Alberta during the 1970s and explores the ways that regional activists became experts in the field of reproductive and sexual health services and education. Patton’s work will make a welcome contribution to feminist history in Canada, particularly in the way she uses oral histories and deep archival research to look beyond urban activism, highlighting the exchange of knowledge between urban, rural, settler, immigrant, and Indigenous women. Her dissertation will enrich our understanding of the significant ways that women activists changed the medical, political, and social spheres around reproductive health and justice in the 1970s, and thus honours the spirit of Marta Danylewycz’s commitment to studying women who challenged the status quo.
